Breast Uplift with Minimal Scarring

Breast Uplift (mastopexy, breast lift): Sydney plastic surgeon, Dr Darryl Hodgkinson explains to Anita Catalano how breasts can be lifted with minimal scarring.

Breast Uplift

“The internal mesh keeps the breast up and perky and if a patient maintains the same weight then the mesh should remain’’

As women age and experience life events such as pregnancy and childbirth their bodies naturally change as a result. Lines on the face appear and it is often more difficult to lose weight and the skin starts to lose its elasticity.

As a result of all these changes, some women may find their breasts have sagged, losing their previous fullness or shape. Often many of these women don’t want to undergo a breast augmentation but would like an operation to correct the droop.

Sydney plastic surgeon, Dr Darryl Hodgkinson, explained one of the surgical ways to lift the breast is by a procedure called Bennelli/Goes Mastopexy. This procedure aims to lift the breast back to a higher more youthful looking position on the body.

The procedure, developed by Brazilian plastic surgeon, Dr Goes, involves an incision being made around the nipple areola. Once the incision is made the surgeon can carefully shape the breast. Dr Hodgkinson explained the breast can only be lifted by a maximum of six centimetres.

Once the breast is lifted, the surgeon may wrap the breast in mesh to help keep it in shape. “The internal mesh keeps the breast up and perky and if a patient maintains the same weight then the mesh should remain,’’ he said. “If the patient loses a lot of weight, then the mesh may become palpable.’’

Occasionally, in the correction of breast asymmetries, there is a major chest wall problem and a customised or pre-fabricated implant of solid silicone can be used at the sametime to achieve the best result.

Uneven breasts or breast asymmetry occurs in about six per cent of women. Dr Hodgkinson said sometimes the

unevenness can result in one nipple being lower, or larger than the other, or one breast being a different shape.

A major concern for women requiring breast uplift is resultant scarring. Dr Hodgkinson said these latest procedures represented an improvement over the traditional anchor incisions and vertical incisions which left an unattractive, permanent scar on the breast. In his practice breast lifting has become as widely requested as breast augmentation.
