Here’s a personal message from Dr Hodgkinson:

The title of this new book, “Cosmetic Surgery - Just the Facts”, was invoked due to the perceived problem that has arisen within the public about the information delivered to them regarding cosmetic surgery procedures. Patients have always relied on physicians to tell them the truth about their medical and surgical conditions and cosmetic surgery should be no different from other doctor/patient relationships. Over the past decade the explosion in cosmetic surgical advertising in print, television, radio and especially internet, has led to a creditability gap between practitioners and patients. The entry into cosmetic surgery by many different specialist and non specialists as well as the rise in cosmetic surgery as a stand alone subspeciality has also confused the public. Special interest groups claiming exclusivity of training and an intense turf war between practitioners has led to the surgeon being seen as more a ‘vendor’ and the patient as a ‘consumer’ or ‘shopper’ and the surgery as a commodity. This is the dilemma for bioethicists as physicians have now tended to brand themselves in the market and are seen more and more as commercialists.

After 30 years in practice as a plastic surgeon with a major interest in cosmetic surgery I have written this book to try and crystallise the facts about procedures that I have learned over that last 30 years of performing these procedures without the impact of sales. My background in head and neck cancer surgery at the Mayo Clinic and in practice in the United States as well as my continuing interest in skin malignancy surgery at the Skin and Cancer Foundation in Sydney and also the cleft lip and palate in our charity, Operation Restore Hope, has emphasised to me over the years that a trust is central to a long term patient surgeon relationship. To maintain integrity a surgeon needs to tell the truth no matter how painful and non compromising it may be at times. By reading the relevant sections in this book, a potential patient should be able to make up their minds as to whether a cosmetic surgical procedure is for them or not. After a consultation I believe that only so much information can be gathered and the distilling of this information into a set of facts can help them rather than have them confused or have them enticed by a marketing and sales package.
